Nick Murphy is better known as Chet Faker. He is an Australian singer as well as a songwriter. He decided to have a stage name since there was already a well-established musician named Nick Murphy, and people became confused when they came to his shows. Chet Baker was a jazz singer, and Murphy admired his voice so his stage name was a homage to Chet Baker. He also is influenced by Bob Dylan and Motown albums.
His first album was Thinking in Textures which was released in March 2012. It was described with phrases like “wonderfully loungey” and it was admired for its ability to “mix subtlety with impressive beauty”. One of the singles from the album, “I’m Into You”, got the number 24 spot on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2012. Other extended plays by the artist include Lockjaw EP, Work, and Missing Link. His singles as a lead artist include “Terms and Conditions”, “I’m Into You”, “Love and Feeling”, “Drop the Game”, “Talk is Cheap”, “1998”, “Gold”, “The Trouble with Us”, and “Fear Less”.
He has made appearances on other albums including LATENYC, Flume, Julian, No Aware, and Migration. He has been nominated for several awards like Breakthrough Independent Artist, Best Independent Dance/ Electronica Album(2012), Best Independent Artist, Best Independent Album, and Best Independent Dance/ Electronica Album(2014). These were all part of the AIR Awards. He has won 5 ARIA Awards including for Best Male Artist, Best Independent Release, Engineer of the year, Producer of the Year, and Best Cover Art.
Faker has been releasing music as Chet Faker for many years, and as of 2016, he tweeted that he will be releasing music under his own name, Nicholas Murphy.
