In Rahat’s family, the tradition of singing qawwali is coming from generation to generation. The whole house of Rahat was the music atmosphere. His father, Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, was also fond of music. He received the music learning from his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. In addition at the age of 7, he gave his first stage show. And his first public appearance during the time when he sang at the death anniversary of his grandfather. In 1985, he toured the UK along with Nusrat Sahib and his group. Despite during this tour, he gave solo performances in the live concerts to accomplishing his duties being a member of the group.
 
He made his Bollywood debut with the song "Lagi Tujh Se Man Man Ki Lagne" for the Puja Bhatt's film Paap in 2003.Since the release of the song his popularity started increasing day by day and became one of the prominent singers of the Bollywood Music industry. In 2012, he went to the music tour to the UK where he made the milestone by singing in front of the huge assembly approx 20,000 people were present in the concert. This made a record of selling the max number of tickets for any concert.
 
His first ever non-filmy music video song "Zaroori Tha" from the 2014 released album “Back 2 Love " was made a great accomplishment and gained the popularity to cross the more than 200 million views even after the release of the song in just three years. In 2002, he worked on the soundtrack for The Four Feathers. Relief has also voiced the soundtrack of the Apocalypto movie by Mel Gibson's in 2006. He also made the soundtrack of the Hollywood movie "Dead Man Walking" in 1985 under the guidance of his uncle Ustad Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan Sahib.
