Salim was born and grew up in Mumbai into a Muslim family. He completed his study in Mumbai.
He made his Bollywood debut as a producer with film Qayamat in 1983 with starter Dharmendra, Jaya Prada, Poonam Dhillon, Smita Patil, Shatrugan Sinha. The movie goes superhit of those time. Next, he produced film "Courage" in 1992, which title name was changed as Jigar before its launch. The movie was launched with star cast Ajay Devgan and Karisma Kapoor.
He also produced several movies including Phool Aur Angaare in 1993, Raja Ki Aayegi Barat in 1993, Baazi in 1995, Badal in 2000, and Chand Sa Roshan Chehra in 2005. Through his film "Raja Ki Aayegi Barat", he was launched actress Rani Mukerji in 1993. He also launched actress Tamannaah Bhatia in Bollywood through his film "Chand Sa Roshan Chehra" in 2005.
