Shagufta Rafique started training in dancing from a very early age as her mother wanted her to see her as an actress. To meet her daily needs, she fell in a world of which she would have never dreamt of. She was just 11 years old when she danced for the first time in a party organized privately. Few drunken men in that part applauded her by throwing cash at her but she was too small to realize what is happening with her. After facing poverty and physical abuse she decided to take up bar dancing as a profession.
 
Her mother’s husband died untimely and that made her take care of her mother. To shoulder the responsibility of herself and her mother, she kept on working as a bar dancer which fetched her Rs. 700 per night. A man misbehaved with her when she was 17 and her mother then asked her to quit her job. She married a wealthy man at a very young age but led a very humiliating life until she finally broke up with him. She then turned a prostitute and also worked as a dancer in Dubai and Mumbai. This was the phase of her life when she started writing.
 
She penned down some stories and approached various production houses but lack of experience denied her with an opportunity. She though kept writing in her time at bars and hotels and one fine day she met Mahesh Bhatt who finally gave her a much-needed break. They met in 2000 and made her debut as a screenplay and dialogue writer at the age of 37 with the film titled Who Lamhe in the year 2006. To date, she has minted screenplay and dialogues for 13 films of Vishesh Productions. Some of her noted films include Dhoka, Showbiz, Murder 2, Jannat 2, and Aashiqui 2 among others. She has mostly worked with Vishesh films on their sequels in recent times.
