Shaktikanta Das was born and raised in Bhubaneshwar. He obtained his graduate and post-graduate degree from St. Stephens college in New Delhi. He then cleared the civil service exams and became an IAS officer. He was posted in Tamil Nadu and served at various prestigious posts for both the Government of Tamil Nadu, and the Government of India. He served at various prestigious posts like Special Commissioner (Revenue), Principal Secretary (Industries), and Secretary (Commercial Taxes), among others. He has also worked at Mahindra Industrial Park Ltd as a project manager. 
 
After Narendra Modi came in power in 2014, he was appointed as the Union Economic Affairs Secretary. He was highly praised for his work and was considered as one of the strongest brains among civil servants in India. He retired from IAS in 2017, and in 2018 was appointed as the RBI governor after succeeding Urjit Patel. His stint as an RBI governor was highly praised and it was during his term that repo rates came down significantly. His appointment as RBI governor was cheered by Indian financial markets as well and they closed over 2 percent in green after his appointment as RBI governor. He handled the situation very well during Covid-19 breakout and it was because of the policies issiued by him that India didn't had a much of an impact on economy as compared to the rest of the world.
