Short Biography

Shamsher Khan was born in 1931 in Guntur in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. He was an Indian Swimmer.

Shamsher Khan Complete Bio & Career

Shamsher Khan rose to prominence after he achieved the 5th position in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne.  To date, no Indian swimmer has surpassed this record of him even after improved infrastructure and the high end coaching facilities.
 
For 24 years of his life, he served in the Indian army and finally retired as Subedar. One of India’s greatest Olympian lived in poverty even at the fag end of his career. He set a national record in the swimming event 200m butterfly event way back in 1954. After becoming a national champion in 1955, he earned an Olympic berth for the 1956 Olympics. Unfortunately, he was just given airfare by the Indian government and he himself took care of the rest of the expenses. To meet his ends in Melbourne, he took a loan of 300 from the army and that is how he survived there. He joined armed forces in the year 1946 and was a part of the army in two crucial battles that took place during his term in the army. One was 1962 China War and the other was war with Pakistan in 1973. After which, he retired from the army.  He lived with his younger son Ali Khan in his native place.
