Shanawas was born and brought up in Thiruvananthapuram. He is the son of the legendary actor "Prem Nazir." He did his schooling from "Montfort School" as well as from "Chirayakeezhu English Medium School."He pursued his master's degree from "The New College"(Chennai) in English literature. He made debutant from the Malayalam film "Premageethangal " in 1981. In the following years, he appeared in many other Malayalam movies, but he took the break from the films for the couple of years. He came back in the films again from 2011 released Malayalam film "China Town. In his filmy career, he has worked over 50 Malayalam movies."Currently, he is well settled in Malaysia.
His wife Ayisha Beevi is the daughter of his father elder sister's daughter. This couple has two sons one is Shameer who is Vlogger as well as Manager in a company in Malaysia. His sec son Ajith is settled and working in Australia. Shameer had also tried his luck in the films and he appeared in the film Uppukandam Brothers Back but could not attain the success.
