While she was studying in Ramanarain Ruia College, she started participating in cultural activities. She faced tough competition from the other renowned colleges of Mumbai like Dahanukar, NM, and Ruparel. During one such event, she was keenly observed by well-known theatre personality named Arun Nalawade. He presented her with a chief role in a commercial Marathi Play. She was in 12th when she played this role. A Marathi play titled Jawai Majha Bhala was one of her initial play that brought her to prominence. Thereafter she advanced to Television with a role in the famous Doordarshan series titled Shanti in the mid-1990s.
 
Since then Shilpa Tulaskar has been a consistent figure on the television. She has been a regular feature in Hindi and Marathi serials. Her noted Hindi television roles include Padma Bansal Gupta in Dill Mill Gayye, Queen Mena in Devon Ke Dev - Mahadev, and Nanda Shinde in Ladies Special.
 
In addition to television, she has also acted in some Marathi films like Anandache Zhaad, Dombivali Fast, and Sanai Choughade among others.
