Sumithra was born in the Thrissur district of Kerala. She is a well-known face of the South-Indian film industry. She was passionate about dance and acting since her childhood. She took professional training in classical dance from K. R. Vijaya. At the young age of 19, she made her acting debut through the film 'Nrithasala' in 1972 directed by A. B. Raj. It was the first time her talent got recognized. After this, she appeared in more than one hundred and fifty Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam films. 

 

She made her Tamil film debut with Avalum Penn Thaane in 1974. It was her first hit Tamil film as well. She became one of the popular heroines of the industry. The actress's first Kannada film in the lead role was Mugaiyada Kathe in 1974. The famous films of her career are Lalitha (1976), Kannamoochi (1978), Rudhra Thaandavam (1978), Durga (1974), Swimming Pool (1976), Neela Sar (1976), Brahma Rudrulu (1986), Geethanjali (1989), Cheluva (1997), Shanti Shanti Shanti (1998), Kurbana Rani (1998), Sathyam Shivam Sundaram (1987), Anand Jyoti (1993), Chandra (2013), Saamy 2 (2018), Jalatharangam (2003), Samphalam (2003), Calcutta News (2008), Uppi Dada M. B. B. S (2005), Chandra (2013), Chamak (2017), Viramai (2022) and many others. 

 

She has been worked with many famous actors such as Kamal Hassan, Sivaji Ganeshan, Rajnikanth, R. Muthuraman, Vijayakumar, and V. Manohar. In 2022, she will appear in the Tamil movie Valimai directed by H. Vinoth. It is a Tamil debut film of actor Kartikeya Gummakonda.
