Reddy completed his high school and undergraduate college level education from Kurnool, in Andhra Pradesh state. Thereafter he obtained a law degree from the famous Osmania University, Hyderabad in the year 1967. 
 
Suravaram Reddy’s participation in political and social actions began during the second half of the 1950s. He got associated with the group who were asking for basic facilities for the schools in Kurnool. He started heading the first of several offices in 1960 by associating with the Kurnool branch of the AISF (All India Students’ Federation), which was the student wing of the Communist Party of India (M). Over the course of his political career, he was actively involved in political activities in Andhra Pradesh and as well as in other states. In 1966 he was made the general secretary of the AISF and relocated his political base to the capital city, New Delhi. He was made the president of the organization in 1970.
 
By 1971, he made it to the party’s national council. After working in Delhi for almost three years, he once again returned to his roots in Andhra Pradesh and work in several capacities for the communist party’s state unit. After failing to make his bid to the state assembly, he finally got elected as an MP in the 1998 general elections.
 
Reddy retained his seat in 2004 general elections as well. He was an active parliamentarian during his years he spent in the chamber. He consistently highlighted issues that were creating a nuisance for the farmers in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He was instrumental in introducing bills that mainly focused on fundamental human rights, such as health care, sufficient nutritious food for school children and improved working conditions.
