Surya Shekhar Ganguly Complete Bio & Career

He was introduced to chess by his late grandfather, Anil Basumallick at the age of 5 and thus he started playing the game of chess from the age of 5 years and by the time he turned 8, he achieved great successes at National Junior and World Junior Championships level. He was the youngest player in his time to win Indian National U-10 and U-12 events. In addition to that, he created history by winning India a bronze medal at the age of 8 in World U-10 Championships held in Warsaw, Poland. He re-wrote history books when he managed to win against a Grandmaster at the age of 11, he was until that time the youngest player to achieve that feat. 
 
He earned the coveted Grandmaster Title at the age of 20 in 2003. After turning earning that title, he won the National Championships for five consecutive years from 2004 to 2008. The year 2010 was arguably his best year in his professional career as in 2010; he won the Bronze medal in team events at the World Team Chess Championship and in addition o that also won himself a gold medal. The very same year, he represented India at the Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China and once again made his country proud by winning a Bronze medal at the team’s event. 
 
Ganguly has served as a member of the team of seconds that has assisted the veteran, Viswanathan Anand,  to beat the likes of Kramnik, Topalov, and Gelfand in World Title matches in 2008, 2010 and 2012 respectively.
