Ajith dropped out of his high school and started working as a salesman for an export oriented garment company for a while before entering the world of modelling. Prior to becoming an actor, he featured in television commercials.
Ajith made his cinematic debut through the Telugu film titled Prema Pustagam in the year 1992. He is best known for the triple role that he played in the Tamil film titled Varalaru. He subsequently made his foray into method acting and his role in Vaali, Mugavaree, Kandukondain Kandukondain and Citizen prior to establishing himself as a renowned action hero with famous films including Dheena, Amarkalam, Villain, Attagasam, Varalaru, Kireedam, Billa, and Mankatha. He predominantly performs as a lead actor in major studio films, genres ranging from drama, action thrillers and romantic comedies.
Off the screen, he has been in news various times for his alleged relationships before his marriage with actress Shalini and also his long-running spat with noted actor Vijay. He has also made headlines on various occasions for making some controversial statements.
Besides modelling and acting, he participating in Formula Asia, Formula 2 races as a racer since 2003 In 2025, he along with his own team Ajith Kumar Racing partcipated in the FIA 24H Series in the Porsche 992 GT3 Cup. On 25th April 2025, he honoured by the Government of India with awarded Padma Bhushan.
