Amar Singh Chamkila (Dhani ram) belongs to the village of Dugri near Ludhiana, Punjab, India. He was a popular Punjabi singer, songwriter, musician, and composer. He had studied till the 8th standard from Gujar Khan Primary school Ludhiana. The singer was murdered at the age of 27. He is also regarded as one of the greatest Punjabi folk live stage performers. He is well known for his famous song Pehle Lalkaare Naal.
He wants to become an electrician. He started his carrier by working at Ludhiana cloth mill. He naturally learned to play the harmonium and dholki. He first partnered up with the female vocalist Surinder Sonia in 1980. Both of them recorded eight duets and released the debut album "Takue Te Takua" music produced by Charanjit Ahuja. In 1985, He with Amarjot released three devotionals LPs: Baba Tera Nankana, Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di Haan, and Naam Jap Le. The LPs were highly successful, and the profit was donated to charities.
His famous song Pehle Lalkare Naal" was featured in the Punjabi film 'Patola' in 1987. He also recorded the song "Mera Jee Karda" for the Punjabi film 'Dupatta'. He with Amarjot recorded more than ninety songs in 1988 They have sung many songs on stage shows including Dhee Mar Jai, Badkar Loko, Jatt Di Dushmani, and Akhiyan Di Maar Buri. He also wrote a song based on Punjabi folk hero Jeona Morh called Kaadha Soorma. In 2007, The stage recording of Chamkila's vocals was remixed and released by Panjabi MC. The song Kaadha Soorma from his 2008 album was also sung by Diljit Dosanjh who was greatly inspired by him. He and his wife Amarjot were killed, along with two members of their band on 8 March 1988 at Mehsamour, Punjab.
