Charles-Michel de l'Epee Complete Bio & Career

Charles-Michel de l'Epée first studied theology. Because he rejected a script to the conviction of Jansenism to sign, was it by the Archbishop of Paris, the consecration refused. He then studied law but was not permitted in this area before, until foreordained by Jacques Benigne Bossuet, the bishop of Troyes. Since this soon died, the now he retreated to Paris, where he contested mainly because of his philanthropic spirit as a lawyer for the needs of the poorer shares of the population.

In 1760 he was introduced to two deaf sisters of an innocent age, whose teacher, Pere Vanin, had just died. He took the sisters in his house and instructed them instead of Vanin. He speculated that the gestures his proteges used to express their ideas directly. From this consideration and the idea of a natural education, he used the teaching of that treatment, which nature had so certainly given to the "deaf-mute": the sign language. He is usually called short, soon thought to bring more deaf children from the enclosing neighbourhoods from the street and to teach and founded in 1771 the institution National of Sourds-Muets de Paris. It is usually regarded as the world's first school for pigeons.

He followed the view of Descartes that language is a sign system that exists outside of man. It is, therefore, possible to link thing and sign in any very arbitrarily, including thing and gesture. From this thought, he originated from the "natural gesture sign" with additional continuations by grammatical characters the Langue of signs française, the first French sign language. While the gesture is based on the nature of the dove, the writing should lead to the cultural language of the hearing. For learning the letters, later also for dictating proper names, unusual finger alphabet is added as an aid. The students thought in that language and expressed themselves in it. As a result, they delivered a high level of knowledge but were still subservient on arbitrators in their dealings with audiences.

Nevertheless, his system was far more successful than that of others, such as Jacob Rodriguez Pereira, who taught much earlier, in 1749, a single deaf witness to speak and show him to the Academy in Paris.
