Kasturba Gandhi Complete Bio & Career

Kasturbai Makhanji Gandhi is popularly known as Kasturba Gandhi. Born on 11 April 1869, she was a political activist. She gave her contribution to the Indian Independence Movement. She belonged to the Bania caste and a Gujarati family.
 
Her political career commenced in South Africa when she established the Phoenix Settlement. She revoked the ill-treatment meted out to Indian Immigrants. She was also arrested for this purpose but even this could not stop her in carrying out her activities. Being in prison, she motivated literate women to teach illiterate women. She was often seen taking part in several protests. She devoted much of her time serving the ashrams. People used to refer to her as Ba in ashrams as she was performing the duty of a mother. She also worked for the upliftment of women in Champaran in 1917. She helped them over there with hygiene, Discipline, reading, health, and writing.
 
Despite poor health, she participated in the Satyagraha movement. Besides this, she also participated in civil disobedience campaigns and nonviolent protests. Her participation in the Quit India movement landed her in prison again. Her health was deteriorating at such a fast pace that she ultimately died at the detention camp in Pune. Throughout her life, she battled with numerous health problems like Bronchitis and Pneumonia. She also suffered two heart attacks in 1944. After her death, the Kasturba Gandhi National memorial trust fund was set up in her memory. Gandhi urged that the fund should be used to help children and women in the village.
