Lil mama studied at Edward R. Murrow High School. Kirkland is the eldest daughter of an eight-child sibling. Being the oldest of her sisters, she acquires the nickname Lil mama. She begins to express herself artistically through poetry and dance.
In 2006, she signed a contract with the label Jive Records. Lil Mama has worked with producers such as Cool & Dre, Scott Storch, The Runners and Dr Lurias. In June 2007 she released her first single “Lip Gloss ", reaching # 10 on Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards in the Monster Single category. This song was ranked # 56 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007. In 2007, she recorded a duet with Avril Lavigne of the song “Girlfriend ".Her second single “G-Slide (Tour Bus)” was released in September of that year but failed to achieve the success of "Lip Gloss" by not entering the charts in the United States. She was most successful in New Zealand, reaching No. 8. The single was used in the soundtrack of the film How She Moves.
On February 2008, she released her third single “Shawty Get Loose” with T-Pain and Chris Brown. Her debut album VYP (Voice of the Young People) was released under Jive Records on April 29, 2008. The fourth single from the album What It Is (Strike a Pose) along with T-Pain, did not enter the charts. In 2009, she announced the title of her upcoming album, Voice of the Young People: I Am That 5. Also in 2009, she becomes the jury of the show America's Best Dance Crew broadcast on MTV 6. On October 7, 2012, RCA Music Group announces its separation from J Records, Arista Records and Jive Records. With this closure, Lil Mama is transferred to RCA Records. In 2013, she played the role of Lisa Lopes, a former member of the TLC band, in the TV movie CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.She appeared in the film which based on the real story named " When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely".This film premiered for the 1.6 + million viewers, and with that, it became the TV "#1" all-time premier of any movie.
