Macy was born to Laura Mclntyre, a math teacher. She studied scriptwriting at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. She recorded her first track during her college days. She started writing and singing as fun time work but later got attached to it. after completing her studies, she started working as a Cashier at Beverly Hills. There she met writer and producer Joe Solo and together they write and recorded many songs. 

 

In 1999, she recorded her first studio album "On How Life Is" produced by Andrew Slater. She won Grammy Award for Best Female Pop. Her second music album is The Id in 2001.  John Frusciante and Erykah Badu made a special appearance in this album. The album ranked 11th on Billboard's top 200. In 2003, she came up with her third music album The trouble with being Myself. This album was not much appreciated by the audience. Her next albums were Big (2007), The Sellout (2010), Covered (2012), Talking Book (2012), The Way (2014), Stripped (2016), and Ruby (2018). 

 

In 2001, she made her acting debut with the film Training Day as Sandman's wife. She also worked in the famous film Spider-Man in 2002. Her next appearance was in Gang of Roses (2003) and Scary Movie 3 (2003), Lackawanna Blues (2005), Shadowboxer (2005), Domino (2005), Idlewild (2006), The Paperboy (2012), Brotherly Love (2015), Papa (2016), Cardboard Boxer (2016) and  Real Talk (2021).
