Mahendra Kumar was born and raised in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. During his teens, he joined Sainik School in Tilaiya as he was interested in joining the defense forces. He then started his career in politics and joined Bajrang Dal. He served as their convener in Karnataka. He was involved in a lot of violence that Bajrang Dal used to do. He though came into limelight after a unit of Bajrang Dal attacked Christians in southern Karnataka. He however was held convict and was held by cops. He got bail after spending 42 days in prison. After Bajrang Dal took their name from those attacks, he felt furious and also resigned from Bajrang Dal. He said that a Christian family who saved a H indu family has influenced his decision and he said that people should stop fighting in the name of religion. He then joined political party JDS and said he will never do communal politics again.
