Maitreyi has become a sensation in the film industry at a very young age. Her family, who originally belonged to Sri Lanka moved to Canada in 2009 due to Civil War in Sri Lanka. She graduated from Meadowvale Secondary School, Ontario. She started acting from her school days and participated in many events and functions. At Meadowvale, during the last year of her school, she got a chance to play a role in Never Have I Ever, a comedy-drama television series. She made her place in the show beating 15000 candidates selected for the audition.

 

Her casting was a matter of attention, especially for the Canadian media as she was only of 17 years at the time of casting. Also, she belongs to Tamil descent. She never performed in any show professionally before it. In 2020 she got cast in the American Weekly television series ''Sidewalk Entertainers''. Her performance in ''Never Ever I have'' is highly admired by the viewers and, she got nominated for many awards.
