Mario Miranda was a famous Indian painter and cartoonist.He used to draw on home walls when he was a kid. He then started drawing in the book his mother brought him. He even dragged himself in trouble for sketching Catholic priests in school. His cartoons during his early life were based on the theme of vignettes of Goan village life.He attended St. Joseph's Boys' High School in Bangalore for his schooling and then perceived his graduation in Bachelors of Arts in History from t St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. He was focused on the Indian Administrative Service during that period. He began studying architecture but soon lost the interest.
He began his career working in an advertising studio. He worked there for 4 years and then began his cartooning full-time career. His first break came with ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’ in which his work was published. His cartoons and drawings brought him an offer from the ‘Current’ magazine. After a year, he got an offer from ‘Times of India’ which had rejected him previously. His creations such as Miss Nimbupani and Miss Fonseca featured in The Illustrated Weekly of India, Femina, and Economic Times.He started in London for 5 years and later get an opportunity to work with well-known cartoonist R.K. Laxman at Times of India in Mumbai.
He was invited by United States Information Services which helped him to showcase his art in the United States and also brought opportunity to work with the creator of Peanuts, Charles M. Schulz and got chance to meet Washington Post's editorial cartoonist, Herblock. He had held exhibitions in more than 22 countries including Japan, France, United States, Brazil, Singapore, Yugoslavia, Australia, etc. His cartoons are seen in the municipal market of Panjim and on the walls of South Mumbai's famous hotspot, Cafe Mondegar, in Colaba. He has received many prestigious awards including a lifetime achievement award from All India Cartoonists' Association, Bangalore and ‘Padma Shri ‘. He was awarded the second highest civilian award of India, ‘ Padma Vibhushan’ posthumously.
Apart from cartooning, he created murals, paintings which got a good response as well. He published few books like Goa with Love, Germany in Wintertime, Laugh it Off etc. He also illustrated few of the books such as The Magic Clay Horse, Dul-Dul, A Journey to Goa etc. He spent later years of his life with his family n his ancestral home, at Loutolim and breathed last in 2011.
