Petro Poroshenko Complete Bio & Career
Petro is a native of Bolhrad, Odessa region. In 1989, he graduated from the faculty of international relations and international law of T. Shevchenko University in Kiev as an economist in international affairs. In 2002, he defended his thesis on "Legal regulation of the management of state corporate rights in Ukraine."
In 1990-1991, Poroshenko worked as deputy general director of the Association of small enterprises and entrepreneurs "Republic." In 1991-1993, he was the CEO of the JSC Exchange House "Ukraine." In 1993-1998, he was the General Director of Ukrainian Industrial Investment Concern CJSC (Ukrprominvest), President of the Leninskaya Kuznya OJSC, Chairman of the Council of Mriya CB, and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Vinnitsa Confectionary Factory JSC.
In 1998, the parliamentary page of Poroshenko’s life began. A non-partisan rookie entered the SDPU and soon became a member of the party’s political council. Cooperation with the Social Democrats lasted for about two years. As the politician himself says, he broke up with the party after he finally realized that its main players were not
Leonid Kravchuk, Yevhen Marchuk, and Vasily Onopenko, but Viktor Medvedchuk and Hryhoriy Surkis. After that, Poroshenko established the Solidarity Party and the parliamentary group of the same name. In 2002, Poroshenko became a member of “Our Ukraine” party. In the Verkhovna Rada of the IV convocation, he headed the budget committee. After the 2006 election, he headed the Finance and Banking Committee; he has already been its member during the first deputy term in office.
Poroshenko’s political life is closely associated with the Council of National Security and Defense of Ukraine. From February to September 2005, he was the secretary of this weighty structure. He lost his post as a result of a scandal involving the accusation of corruption of the closest associates of the president. He was accused of lobbying for personal interests. Then it all started with a scandalous press conference by State Secretary Oleksandr Zinchenko. The strongest squall of criticism fell on Poroshenko and his colleagues, Nikolai Martynenko, Oleksandr Tretyakov, and David Zhvania.
Since December 2012, he is a member of the Verkhovna Rada of the 7th convocation. He became a member of the parliament as an independent candidate from Vinnytsia region. He is also a Member of the Committee on European Integration. In the winter of 2013-2014, he was an active participant in the Maidan revolution. He won the presidential election with 54.7% of the votes.
On June 7, 2014, the inauguration of the fifth president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, took place. His presidency wasn’t all that smooth. On January 29, 2019, Petro Poroshenko nominated his candidacy for participation in the presidential election as a self-nominated candidate. At the end of the first round of elections, held on March 31, 2019, Poroshenko took second place after Volodymyr Zelensky, gaining 15.94% of the votes and going for the second round.
In the second round of the presidential elections on April 21, 2019, Petro Poroshenko was defeated with 24.4% of the votes. Zelensky won 73.2% of the votes. It was quite a
shocking turn of events.
