Gopichand studied at St. Paul's School. At the age of 10, he became so skilled in the game of badminton that his discussion started going to school. At the age of 13, he had to face the problem of muscle breakdown. In the same following year, in the Inter-School Competition, he won the titles of singles and doubles. Without getting upset by his injury, and with full determination he turned back and reached in the finals round of the state-level junior badminton competition held in Andhra Pradesh. He did his graduation in Public Administration.
He made his International Badminton debut in 1991 against Malaysia. Three times for the Thomas-Cup-tournaments, he represented his country. In the SAARC Badminton Tournament in 1996, he got his career first Gold Medal and in 1997 he repeated the same momentum again. As a team player he first won the silver medal and secondly in the singles, he won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games. In 1997 he performed in the Indian-Grand-Prix-Tournament held in Delhi for the first time. In this event, Gopichand has consistently beaten the best players in the world, although he lost in the final match. He won the Francis Toulouse Open championship and the Scottish Open championship in 1999.
He won his first national badminton championship title in 1996; he won five titles in a series by the year 2000. Apart from this, he also won two gold medals and a silver medal in the National Games organized in Imphal. In the same following year, he led the badminton team of Andhra Pradesh state and won the prestigious Rahmatullah Cup. The most memorable moment of Gopichand's life came when he won the All England Open Badminton Championship held in London in 2001. By seeing his outstanding contribution to the Badminton he was awarded by Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2001.
