Ram Jethmalani Complete Bio & Career
Ram Jethmalani after completion of his law studies at a young age relocated to Mumbai to try his luck. He before the partition of India began his career as a professor in Pakistan. After which, he started his own law firm in Karachi but due to partition, he had to relocate to India. He with sheer knowledge and hard work became chief justice of India. He successfully defended smugglers in a case and became famous as smuggler’s lawyer. He during the course of his career also served as a professor in Government Law College in Mumbai and Wayne State University in the US where he used to teach Comparative Law.
He served as a member of the International Bar Council and also served as the Chairman of the Indian Bar Council. He made his foray into politics by contesting in the 1971 general elections as an independent candidate. He though lost the elections. He heavily criticized the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for imposing emergency. He again contested in 1980 elections and this time he was elected as an MP. He was sent to Rajya Sabha in 1988 and served as Union Minister of Law, Company Affairs, and Justice under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government in 1998. In 2004 general elections, he contested against Atal Bihari Vajpayee but lost. In 2010, BJP sent him to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. He was even called as an opportunist by opposition parties. He joined NJP in 2013 and left the party in 2016 and joined the political party RJD in 2016.
In the course of his career as a lawyer, he fought various high profile cases such as the defense of Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi's killers, defense of dons like Haji Mastan and Afzal Guru, defended Yeddyurappa’s case in illegal mining case to name a few. He was arguably one of the best lawyers in India and more than that an outspoken personality who spoke against wroung doing without any fear.
