Sindhutai Sapkal was born on 14-11-1948 in Pipri Meghe, Wardha, British India. Because Sapkal's parents did not expect her to live long, she was called Chindhi (Marathi for "torn piece of cloth"), and she received little care or affection from her family. The hardships of her childhood pushed her to drop out of school after she completed the fourth grade. At age 12, she married Shrihari Sapkal, who was 32 years old. The marriage did not last long and Shrihari left her with a daughter to care for when she was just 20.
 
Sindhutai Sapkal, who was begging for food along with railway platforms, came to realize that there were many children abandoned by their parents. She adopted them as her own. She then begged much more rightly for them to be fed. Later she gifted her biological child to the trust Shrimant Dagdu Sheth Halwai, Pune, so that no one would be left out. Sapkal protested against the displacement of eighty-four villages and met then Minister of Forests Chhedilal Gupta. He agreed that the people should never be relocated until the government makes adequate plans for alternate locations. 
 
Sapkal had shown Prime Minister Indira Gandhi a picture of a Tribal who had lost his eyesight to a wild bear when she arrived to start the tiger project his eyes to a wild bear. She then demanded compensation for the man, which Gandhi ordered at once. After being informed of the plight of orphaned and abandoned Adivasi children, Sapkal took care of them in return for meager amounts of food. It became her life's mission shortly after that. Sapkal, known affectionately as "Mai", worked with over 1,500 orphaned children, and through them had a grand family of 382 sons-in-law and 49 daughters-in-law. She used the money she received for her work in orphanages to buy land to build homes for children who'd lost their parents.
