Sukanya is a highly successful South Indian film actress who has worked in all South Indian language films but predominantly in Tamil and Malayalam language films and has occasionally made an appearance in Telugu and Kannada films as well. She has completed 25 years in the industry.
 
In addition to acting, she is a good singer and dancer as well. She is trained Bharatnatyam dancer and has performed on stage shows across the globe. She is also renowned for her unique hairstyles. She has styled hairs of many of her co-stars like Khusboo and Brinda Das among many others.
 
She made her acting debut with the Tamil film Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu in 1991. In her illustrious acting career, she won as many as five Filmfare awards for her performance in Tamil films like Walter Vetrivel and Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu among others. She also won Best supporting actress award for her performance in Malayalam film Innathe Chintha Vishayam in 2008. Off late, she has been playing lead actor’s mothers role. She is famous in the industry for playing homely roles. She hardly portrayed the glamorous character on screen.
 
In addition to films, she has also acted in various television serials as well. Besides performing, she has also served as a judge of the Tamil show titled Super Kudumbam.
