A. Raja Complete Bio & Career
Andimuthu Raja is post graduate in Law from Government Law College, Tiruchirapalli. He started his career in student politics. He is the senior leader and four-time Member of Parliament of DMK. In 1996 he was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time from Perambalur and was reelected in 1999 and 2004. He went to Lok Sabha from Nilgiris in 2009.
He served as Minister of State for Rural Development from 1996 to 2000, Minister of State Health and Family Welfare from 2000 to 2004 and Environmental and Forest Minister from 2004 to 2007. His most talked about tenure was of Communication and Information Technology Minister from May 2007 in which he is accused of conspiring the 2G Spectrum Scam along with his predecessor Dayanidhi Maran and party member Kanimozhi. Raja and his two colleagues were arrested in Feb2, 2011 and sent to 15-month judicial custody.
The 2G spectrum scam is considered as the largest scam with scam value of about US$ 28 billion. It involves the sale of bandwidths to some organization at the price much lower than the market price. CAG Report named A.Raja responsible for this scam as most of the disputed allocations were personally signed by him. These allegations forced him to resign on November 14, 2010. An investigation by Retd. Judge Shivraj Patil also held Raja responsible for the “procedural lapses” and estimate was made that he had received kickbacks of as much as Rs. 30 Billion. The case is being heard in CBI court as Raja is denying allegations from day one.
A Raja and his associates have been acquitted by the CBI court from all charges on December 21, 2017.
