Ashok Gehlot has obtained a masters degree in science and law and a postgraduate degree in economics. Ashok Gehlot has taken over many ministries in the Central Government. He has also been the Chief Minister of Rajasthan State in 1998 and 2008. He has been in politics since his college days. From 1973 to 1979, he was also the President of the Congress Party, NSUI Young Wing.
 
He was elected from Jodhpur parliamentary constituency for the first time in the year 1980 for the 7th Lok Sabha (1980-84). After that Ashok Gehlot won this election constituency in the 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th Lok Sabha elections. He has also been the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and Sports Ministry from 1982 to 1984. After this, he was appointed Minister of State. As Union Minister of State, he has served in the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. After this, he was given independent charge of the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Textiles. In 1989, for a very short period, he took over as the Home Minister of Rajasthan.
 
For the short term from June 1989 to November 1989, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Public Health Engineering also took over. On June 21, 1991, PV Narasimha Rao became the Union Minister of Textiles (Independent Charge) in the Government. He became the President of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress at the age of 34. From Sept 1985 to Jun 1989, Dec1, 1994 to Jun 1997, Jun 1997 to Apr14, 1999, he remained the President of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee. 
 
From January 2004 to July 16, 2004, Gehlot worked as a specially convened member of the All India Congress Committee and while remaining in this post, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, successfully discharged their responsibilities as in-charge of the state. From 17 July 2004 to 18 February 2009, Gehlot worked as General Secretary of All India Congress Committee. His tenure is known for other significant achievements besides unprecedented drought management, power generation, development of resources, employment generation, industrial and tourism development, efficient financial management and good governance. He worked very efficiently and efficiently with the help of famine management. On Dec 17, 2018, he will take oath as the CM of Rajasthan for the third time.
