Colin Luther Powell was a United States statesman as well as a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States' first Secretary of State and first African American who serves under President George W. Bush. He was born to Jamaican immigrants Luther and Maud Powell in Harlem, New York. He was raised in the South Bronx and educated in the New York City public schools. Then he did graduation from Morris High School in 1954. He studied geology at, City College of New York. His academics include a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University.
Then, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1989. He was a professional soldier for 35 years also held several command and staff positions and rose to the four-star rank. In 1995, wrote his autobiography, My American Journey. In 2012, he wrote retirement another book, It Worked for Me, Lessons in Life and Leadership.
He pursued a career as a public speaker, addressing audiences at home as well as abroad. Moreover, he was president of America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth. The man won numerous American and foreign military awards and decorations. Despite that, he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the President's Citizen's Medal, the Secretary of State Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Vishisht Seva Medal. He died of complications from COVID-19 in 2021at the age of 84 years.
