In the introductory phase of the political journey, G K Vasan, although not formally chairman of the party, was in any case energetically involved in the political activities in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. He supported the GK Moopanar in his political strategies and also participated in election campaigns in the constituency of the district of Mayiladuthurai and even the constituency of the state of Papanasam.

After his contribution in the Indian National Congress, G K Vasan played a significant role in both at national as well as the state level politics. He eventually became a secretary in 2002 of the All India Congress Committee and went to the standard of growth to become the youngest president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee in the year 2004; making him stand next to Perunthalaivar K.
