Murli Manohar Joshi was born on 5 January 1934. He is a physicist and a Politician. He completed his studies from Meerut College and Allahabad University. He also taught physics at Allahabad University. He came into RSS touch at a young age. He also participated in Cow Protection Movement in 1953. In 1955, he participated in Kumbh Kisan Andolan which was held in Uttar Pradesh.
 
During the emergency period, he remained in Jail. He was later on appointed as the secretary of the Janata Parliamentary party after the Janata Party won the elections. Due to the breakdown of the party, they founded the Bharatiya Janata Party. He headed the party as its treasurer. The provinces with which he dealt were Bengal, Bihar, and the North Eastern States. In the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he worked as the human resource development minister. He was very much inspired by the works of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Deendayal Upadhyaya. He emerged as the winner of the 15th Lok Sabha elections held from Varanasi. In 2009, he was appointed as the chairman of the Manifesto preparation Board. Allahabad university honored him with the award titled, Proud Past Alumni. Later on, he won the Kanpur Constituency by 2.23 lac votes.
