Manik Sarkar is a politician from India. He had served as the Chief Minister of the state of Tripura from 1998 to 2018. He is said to be the Chief Minister with least possessions in the country. Even from his student days, he was active in student movements. He became a member of the Marxist Communist Party at the age of 19. During his study at the MBB College, he was a candidate for the Student’s Federation of India. He pursued his Bachelor’s Degree at MBB College. He got early political exposure and went on to become the General Secretary of the College’s Student Union. He also became the Vice President of the Student’s Federation of India.
After being selected in the State Committee of CPI (M), he was made the Secretariat of the party in 1978. He was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Agartala Constituency in 1980. Soon, he became the Chief Whip of the party. He was then appointed as the State Secretary of the CPI (M) in the year 1993. Politburo is the main policy-making and executive committee in the CPI (M), for which he was made a member in 1998. Manik Sarkar became the Chief Minister of Tripura for the first time in March 1998. He is the only Chief Minister from India to not own a personal home or car. He also donated the entire salary that he got from his Chief Minister office and received Rs. 10,000 per month as allowance. He held the office for 4 consecutive terms.
