Mazhar Khan made his cinematic debut as an actor with the film Sampark in 1979. His next release was the super hit film Shaan. For his performance in the film, he is still remembered and one of the iconic songs of Bollywood "Naam Abdul Hai Mera" was picturised on him. He was a small time actor though has appeared in various movies during the decade of the 1980s. Some of his noted films include Arth, Sohni Mahiwal, Shiva Ka Insaaf and Ghulami among many others.

He then ventured into direction and production and started his venture with the film, Gang. The multi-starrer film shelved for almost a decade citing Khan’s ill-health. The film was finally completed by his assistant director Mashkoor Chowdhary and the film rele3ased in 2000. By then a lot of movies were already made on the same subject in Bollywood but critics hailed his efforts for bringing in some new subject in Hindi cinema in the early 1990s.

He was previously married to Rubaina and had a son named Azhar with her. After divorcing her, he married veteran diva of Bollywood then, Zeenat Aman in 1985. He had two sons from this marriage named Zahaan and Azaan. The couple was married until his death in 1998 though Zeenat already filed for divorce but since he died, the couple legally didn't get separated.
