Short Biography

Neerja Bhanot was born on 7th September 1963 in Chandigarh, Punjab in India. She was a brave purser of the Pan American World Airways which was based in Mumbai, India.

Neerja Bhanot Complete Bio & Career

This brave lady was shot and killed by the terrorists, who hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on 5th September 1986. She sacrificed her life to save the on board passengers. She was the youngest receiver of India’s highest and most respected peacetime Award for bravery, The Ashok Chakra Award.
 
Bhanot also had a successful modeling career along with being a purser. She was a brave heart who saved lives of 359 people among a total of 379 on board and not only this; she even prevented the plane from getting off the ground.
 
Posthumously she received multiple bravery awards for her courage from many countries. She was honored with Bravery Award by the United States of America and Tamgha-e-Insaniyat from Pakistan. In 2004 Indian government released a Postal Stamp commemorating her. Bhanot’s family had set up a Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust, which presents Neerja Bhanot Award every year. A film based on her story titled Neerja was released in the year 2016.

Neerja Bhanot died on 05-09-1986 at the age of 22 years only in Karachi in the state of Sind, Pakistan. On Pan Am Flight 73, when she was flying from Mumbai to the United States, then that aircraft was hijacked by four armed men at Karachi airport in Pakistan on 5 September 1986 in which 361 passengers and 19 crew members were flying including her. 

The reason of their hijacking was that they wanted to move out of their members from jail as they were part of the terrorist Abu Nidal Organization. She opened one of the doors of aircraft as they opened fire and set off explosives after 17 hours. 

She decided to help the other passengers to escape. She was shot while protecting the three alone American children from beating of bullets of the terrorists. Two passengers were killed during the hijacking out of total 41 American. After her death, she was known as "the heroine of the hijack" and became the youngest receiver of the Ashok Chakra Award.
