Prem Kumar Dhumal is a politician from India. He was the 12th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
He attended Doaba College in Jalandhar to pursue his Master of Arts degree. He then obtained an LL.B degree from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. He started his profession as a lecturer at a college in Punjab.
He was chosen as the vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in the year 1982. Later in 1984, Dhumal was named as the candidate for Hamirpur constituency. Although he lost the election, he went on to win in 1989 and 1991. In 1993, following the demise of another leader Jagdev Chand, Dhumal became active in Himachal Pradesh state politics. He became the president of Bharatiya Janata Party in the state in 1993. He also became the Chief Minister of the state in March 1998. He had a successful tenure as Chief Minister and the state saw significant development in infrastructure. He was in the opposition party after losing power in 2003. He resigned to his legislative assembly seat upon winning a by-election at Harmipur Loksabha constituency in 2007.Dhumal again resigned after BJP won the 2017 legislative assembly elections. His son Anurag contested the constituency for by-elections and won. He again became the Chief Minister of the state in December 2007 and lost power in 2012 elections.
He was the Chief Minister candidate in the 2017 elections. However, he lost the election at Sujanpur constituency to Rajinder Rana.
