Ram Vilas Paswan was born on 05-07-1946 in Shaharbanni, Khagaria in the state of Bihar, India. He was an Indian Politician & Activist who served as Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, from 26-05-2014 to till death.

Ram Vilas Paswan was a government official and a noted Indian politician who had established the regional political front named LJP (Lok Janshakti Party) in the eastern state of Bihar in India.
Paswan belonged to a Dalit (Scheduled Caste) family. He was good in academics and obtained his graduate Law and MA degree and also cleared the civil services exams and received an offer of the post of DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police). He though denied the job and made his foray into politics by joining the SSP (Samyukta Socialist Party). Paswan was promoted as the leader of Dalits. He was also considered as the leader of other backwards Hindu classes and the Muslim community as well.
Paswan got elected as an MLA for the first time in 1969 and a year later, he was given the post of joint secretary of SSP’s Bihar unit. To finish the dominance of INC, he formed a new front called Lok Janshakti Party in 1974. He was also among various other leaders who were imprisoned during the Emergency in 1975. After releasing from the jail in 1977, he got elected as an MP for the first time in his political career and is currently an 8 time MP of Lok Sabha.
Since his party was an alliance of NDA in Vajpayee government in 1999, he was made the Minister of Coal & Mines and Communications. After his fallout with BJP, he formed an alliance with the Congress-led UPA and was made the Minister of Steel and Chemicals & Fertilizers. After he was defeated in the 2009 general elections, he left the UPA and few months before the 2014 general elections his party formed an alliance with BJP once again.
Paswan finally regained the constituency of Hajipur which he lost in 2009 and in Narendra Modi’s cabinet, he in Narendra Modi's cabinet as the Minister of Consumer Affairs. He continued with his ministry again after the Modi government came into power in 2019.
