Shammi’s actual name is Nargis Rabadi. She lost her father while she was just 3 years old. Prior to acting, she worked at Jhonson & Jhonson packing department. She got her first acting offer through a friend who asked her to audition for a role. Sheikh Mukhtar was in search of a new face and after her audition, he immediately roped her in his film Begum Para. Since Nargis was already present in Bollywood, director changed her screen name to Shammi.
She started her career playing lead roles in the decade of the 1950s. She became the most sought after name for casting somebody in a comic or goofy roles. Though her career as a lead actress didn’t last long, her career in playing character roles helped her achieve new heights. In the dcecade of the 1980s and 1990s, she was the most popular actress to play mother and grandmother’s role. Some of her noted roles include films like Gopi Kishan, Gurudev, Imthihaan, Hum Saath Saath Hain and Hum among others.
In addition to films, she has also acted in television series like Ilzam, Bandish, Pehli Jhalak, Ghar Sanskar, and Raj Tilak among various others. Among all the roles that she played, she is best remembered for her performance in the super hit series called Shriman Shrimati. On silver screen, she nailed with her performance in the film Lahu Ke Do Rang. She couldn’t find herself various meaningful roles after the decade of 2000 and was seen in very films since then. Her last appearance was in the film Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi which released in the year 2013.
