Cardi B attended the Musical Theater and Technology High School and, as a young man, she was part of the extremely violent street gangs. Because her family was in miserable condition during her childhood, Cardi started working as a cashier at a supermarket in Manhattan. After being fired, she began working as a stripper when she was only 19 years old. 
 
In this regard, she confirmed in an interview that this work helped her out of poverty and in addition to domestic violence because her boyfriend at that time was much possessive. Given the life she had, Cardi resorted to plastic surgery to increase her breasts and buttocks to attract more clients and get better tips. After saving enough money, she left her apartment in the Bronx and with it, her boyfriend. Although one of her goals was to get a degree, Cardi left the university because she did not have time to study and continue with her work. In 2013, she began to become a personality of social networks, mainly Vine and Instagram. About her stage name, she revealed that it is an abbreviation of her childhood nickname, Bacardi.
 
On November 2015, Cardi made her music debut by remixing Shaggy's single "Boom Boom." The following month, she joined the main cast of the sixth season of the Love & Hip Hop: New York program. On March 2016, she released her first mixtape, Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1, under the KSR label. This reached twentieth place listing Rap Albums of Billboard and the twenty - seventh of Independent Albums. The following month, she appeared in an episode of Kocktails with Khloe where she revealed how she told her mother that she was a stripper. 
 
On January 2017, she released a second mixtape, Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2, and after finishing the seventh season of Love & Hip Hop: New York in February, announced that he was reached by Atlantic Records to sign a contract.
