Himanta Biswas Sarma
Recently remained in debate for contesting in the Lok Sabha polls, Himanta Biswas Sarma is an Indian politician serving with the designation of an MLA from Jalukbari, Assam. He is currently a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2015. Apart from these two designations, Himanta has also served as the Cabinet Minister and convener for BJP.
Initial career phase
Born in Guwahati in 1969, Himanta Biswas Sarma completed his schooling in Guwahati in the year 1985. After his schooling, he started with higher education at Cotton College. After completing his graduation in the year 1990, he performed his duties in the form of a General Secretary of the Cotton college Student’s Union from the years 1991 to 1992. He completed graduation and post-graduation in political science in 1990 and 1992 respectively from the same college. After this, he also completed LLB from Government Law College in Guwahati and a Ph.D degree from the Guwahati University too. Sarma started practicing law with the Guwahati High Court in the period 1996 to 2001. From here, he started with his professional career in life.
Himanta and Politics
In the year 2001, Himanta was firstly elected for the Assam Legislative Assembly where he successfully defeated the leader AsomGana Parishad and Bhrigu Kumar Phukan. This victory re-elected him in the year 2006 and after that in 2011 for three consecutive terms. with more than 75000 votes. Sarma handled important portfolios for both the Cabinet and State designated as the Minister of State of Agriculture, Planning and Development, Health, Finance, Education, and Assam Accord Implementation from the period between 2002 to 2014.
His decision to join BJP
Sarma when began his journey in politics joint the Congress party in Jorhat. He worked as an MLA from the same state from 2001 to 2005 with the Indian National Congress ticket. However, in the year 2015, Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He took the oath on 24th of May 2016 when he won the Assembly elections held in 2016 designated as Cabinet Minister. However, after having political differences with TarunGogoi he resigned from every portfolio in 2014.
Currently, Sarma is working with Badminton Association of India, elected as the President. Along with this, Sarma has also worked as the Assam Badminton Association since 2016. Be it a Cabinet Minister, convener or any other designation, Himanta has always served each role with complete dedication towards his duties.
