Sanjay Gandhi, born on 14th December 1946 in New Delhi, India. He was a famous Indian politician & Pilot, one who belonged to the Gandhi dynasty of India.

Sanjay Gandhi Complete Bio & Career

Sanjay Gandhi was influential Indian politician and an important member Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. He started his schooling at Welham Boys' School and then at the Doon School. But he was not interested in any studies, so he didn’t perceive any later education and joined Rolls-Royce in Crewe for an apprenticeship in England for 3 years. He carried interest in sports cars and got the pilot's license. He was looking to build a career as an airline pilot.
 
When his mother Indira Gandhi' was Prime Minister, her cabinet proposed a ‘People's car’ production for the middle-class population. As a result, Sanjay Gandhi was appointed as a Managing Director of newly formed 'Maruti Motors Limited'. He was inexperienced and the company was not able to work under his guidance. Corruption was speculated. He tried to convince Volkswagen AG to collaborate for the project. But he started focusing on politics during emergency period and the project was sidelined. In 1977 the newly formed Janata Government liquidated the company and in 1980, ’Maruti Udyog Ltd’ was established and Japanese company Suzuki accepted the collaboration with the company and work for first People's Car which was Maruti 800 started.
 
His mother Indira Gandhi, considering the opposition-led strikes and protests, badly affected economy, announced a national emergency. She even censored the press, delayed elections and under the name of national security, suspended many of the constitutional freedoms. Many of the freedom fighters were arrested. During this period, Sanjay Gandhi’s involvement in politics was increased. He was the important advisor of his mother. He and his friend Bansi Lal seemed to run the country virtually. He even appointed many ruffians and hooligans into the party who can force and threat whoever opposes him and his decisions.
 
During the emergency, He and her mother declared a 5 point and 20-point economic programme respectively. Later these two were combined to start 25 point programme. He initiated a compulsory sterilization program to control the population growth in 1976.This act of his party was criticized badly. Even the order for bulldozed the tenements near Jama Masjid was given under him in 1976 which caused more than 150 people’s death. 
 
Amrit Nahata directed 'Kissa Kursi Ka’ which was a satirical showing Sanjay Gandhi and Indira Gandhi’s work. But when the film was sent to Censor Board for certification and later to Government, 51 objections were raised against it. Though Nahata replied that the all characters were not real and the film didn’t refer any particular political party or individuals, the prints were burnt by the orders of Sanjay Gandhi. The legal case was filed and he was even sentenced to 2 years and 1-month prison in 1979 though the court’s verdict was overturned later.

Sanjay died at the age of 33 from head wounds in an air crash on 23rd June 1980 near Safdarjung airport in New Delhi.
