Short Biography

Satyajit Ray was born on 02-05-1921 in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India. He was an Indian Film Director, Film Producer, Screenwriter, Lyricist, Composer, Illustrator, Writer, Publisher, Graphic Designer & Calligrapher who known for his work in Bengali, English and Hindi films.

Satyajit Ray Complete Bio & Career

Satyajit’s mother took him to his maternal uncle’s house after her husband’s death and shutting down the business of Printing which ray’s grandfather started. In initial days, Ray’s mother was his teacher but after shifting to Brahmo samaj, He was admitted to Ballygunj Govt. school at the age of 8. This is the age when he turned around and inclined towards movies and Western classical music, for which he used to read magazines like Photoplay and Picturegoer. 
 
In 1936, He had joined the Presidency College on his mother’s wish where he studied Science but later on moved to Economics in final year as his Uncle assured him a job. In 1939 a new Graduate came and mother wanted him to be settle down to earn livelihood and suggested him to be a painter where he agreed after much resistance. He joined Rabaindra Nath Tagore’s Vishva Bharti Art University at Shantiniketan. It was during this time that he came to know about the miniature painting and oriental art- Indian sculpture, Chinese landscapes and Japanese woodcuts. Satyajit Ray associated himself with a British-run advertising agency called D.J. Keymer in the year 1943. He was the junior visualiser there. 
 
He spend next 13 years here, until he became a full-time filmmaker after success of Pather Panchali. On August 26 1955, ray successfully launched his film Pathar panchali in Kolkata from his advertising experience. In his 40 years of filmmaking he was interrupted by bad health and suffered two heart attacks during the shooting of movie Ghare Baire, where his son Sandip Ray completed the work.

Satyajit Ray died on 23-04-1992 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India at age of 71. He was suffering from heart complications. He was hospitalised but never get back to normal and died.

They both had a son Sandip Ray and a daughter named Lalita Ray. He was from a very literary family were his grandfather Upendrakishore Ray was a famous Poet, Writer, Violin player and a painter too. He had a grandson named Souradip Ray.
