Lata Mangeshkar was a popular Indian playback singer and a music composer. She was one of the most popular and respected playback singers in the Indian music industry. She had sung thousands of songs for Hindi movies and recorded songs in 36 regional Indian and foreign languages.

She had a musical background as her father was a well known classical singer. She learned music from her father. She attended school only for one day. Sources said that she left the school after being scolded by the teacher for teaching songs to other students. Few sources reveal that the reason behind leaving school was the denial of permission to bring her sister Asha with her to school.

After her father’s death, Navyug Chitrapat Movie Company’s owner and one of the closest friends of her father Master Vinayak looked after the children. He was the one who helped her in becoming an actress and a singer. "Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari" was her first song sung but it was dropped from the movie. She then acted in the Marathi movie ‘Pahili Mangalaa-gaur ‘ in 1942 and sang the song ‘Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai’. She sang her first song in Hindi for the Marathi film ‘Gajaabhaau’ with lyrics "Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu".

She shifted to Mumbai when Master Vinayak's company moved there. She learned Hindustani classical music under Ustad Aman Ali Khan. She sang "Paa Lagoon Kar Jori" in 1946. She later sang "Maata Tere Charnon Mein" for a movie ‘Badi Maa’. A music director named Ghulam Haider was her mentor after Master Vinayak’s death. After being rejected by Sashadhar Mukherjee, Ghulam Haider gave her first break and she sang "Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora” which was a super hit song at that time.

She learned Urdu from Shafi after actor Dilip Kumar’s disapproving comment on her Maharashtrian accent in Urdu/Hindi songs.
