He was born to a music director father S. D. Burman and lyricist mother Meera Dev Burman. First, he was married to Rita Patel in 1966 and got divorced in 1971. After nine years, he was remarried to playback singer Asha Bhosle in the year 1980. The couple was staying together till his death on 04-01-1994. He was the father of three step-children named Anand Bhosle, Hemant Bhosle & Varsha Bhosle.
