She entered the cinematic world by appearing in Mehboob Khan’s Bahen in 1941. After which she was cast with petty roles in films like Radhika, Nirdosh, and Adaab Arz just to name a few. Her acting career took a U-turn after she was offered Anokha Pyaar in 1948. Soon she established herself as a leading star of Hindi Cinema.

She was famous for her association with veteran actor Ashok Kumar. Her power-packed performance in films like Sangram and Samadhi in which she was cast opposite Ashok Kumar were the milestones of her illustrious acting career. The successful and audience favourite couple delivered other hit films like Kafila, Jalpari, Saloni, Naaz, and Nau Bahar amongst several others. She was lauded for her performance in films like Shikast, Kaalapani and Hum Sab Chor Hain. After the release of her film Bombay Race Course in 1965, she retired from acting. She made a comeback 18 years later with the film titled Nastik.

She was the niece of famous actress Rattan Bai and cousin of another famous actress Shobhna Samarth who was the mother of actresses Tanuja and Nutan and thus was the grand-aunt of Tanisha and Kajol. She was the part of famous Bollywood clan of Samarth-Mukherjee family. Famous celebrities like Ayan Mukherjee, Joy Mukherjee, and Rani Mukherjee were her relatives. In 1940s, she was married to film director V. C. Desai who died on 25-01-1946. After the death of Desai, she later got married to actor Prabhu Dayal.
