Geoffrey Kendal is a famous English Actor and Theatre Director, who travelled throughout India in the 1940s and 1950s with his theatre group Shakespeareana, doing Shakespeare plays. He was born as Richard Geoffrey Brag in Kendal, Westmorland on 7th September 1909.

In his early days, Geoffrey joined repertory theatre companies and performed with them in small English towns. He married Laura Liddell who he met in one of such tours where she was also performing as an actress. During the Second World War, he performed in Hong Kong, Singapore and the backwaters of Malaya and Borneo along with his troupe and arrived in India in 1944.

Geoffrey Kendal then worked as an actor-manager leading his theatre company Shakespeareana and toured throughout India for the next two decades. He also acted in movies like Junoon (1978) and 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981).

He published his autobiography, The Shakespeare Wallah: the Autobiography of Geoffrey Kendel, in 1986. In 1990, Geoffrey and Laura Kendal we jointly awarded by Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Theatre-Direction by Sangeet Natak Academi, India’s National Academy for music, dance and theatre. Both of his daughters Jennifer and Felicity Kendal turned out to be successful actors. Jennifer was part of his theatre group Shakespeareana where she met and married Shashi Kapoor who comes from the well-known family of Bollywood. His second daughter Felicity married first the actor Drewe Henley and then remarried the director Michael Rudman.
