Prithviraj Kapoor, the patriarch of the Kapoor family, is also the founder of the Indian theatre and the Hindi Cinema, in the country. He is the actor, who started his career in the silent era of movies. He was a multi-talented actor, who could do a positive balance between the theatre and the screen.

Starting his career from the year 1927, the versatile actor proved his caliber in the silent cinema, the theatre, and the talkie cinema. He was one of the founding members of the Prithvi theatres. This venture of his was very close to his heart and he invested a considerable amount of his earnings in the Prithvi Theatres. The theatre used to portray plays, which were conceptualized to motivate the youth, to participate in the Freedom struggle of India. On the 50th anniversary of Prithvi Raj Theatres, Indian postage stamp issued a 2Rs commemorative stamp in his honour.

Few of the noted movies done by the accomplished actor, are Alam Ara, Sikandar, Vidyapati, Aawara, Nanak Nam Jahaz Hai and Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar. In addition to Hindi, he has also acted in a landmark Punjabi film called Nanak Nam Jahaz Hai in the year 1969. The film was a huge hit and there were lines of kilometers in Punjab to watch this film. He also received a number of awards out of which the most prominent were, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
